Too much and not enough, rain is a shared experience, and one of the ways climate change can become a conversation rather than a confrontation. READI Chicago is a two-year program in which participants engage in months of paid employment, cognitive behavioral therapy, coaching and skill building, and supportive services. During employment, participants work approximately 25 hours and spend approximately 15 hours receiving coaching and services each week. At the conclusion of the month employment period, participants will continue for six months of case management and coaching as they transition to stable, unsubsidized employment.
See a Problem?
The majority of participants have been disconnected from services and have little to no traditional work histories. READI Chicago outreach workers, who have similar backgrounds and experiences, practice relentless engagement to encourage participants to stay the course and to build new relationships with potential participants. Our program supports them even when they experience setbacks.
But we believe that, with intensive support, they can succeed. Springfield, Ill. February 13, — In an effort to protect consumers from extreme auto title lending practices and triple-digit interest rates, Heartland Alliance, Senator Kimberly Lightford, Representative Christian Mitchell, and various consumer protection organizations today announced the Fair Lending Act SB at the Illinois State Capitol. For too long, car title lending has trapped Illinoisans in loans with exorbitant interest rates and thousands of dollars in fees.

This puts thousands of at risk of losing their car every year, a critical source of transportation to school and work. This new legislation would cap car title loan interest rates at 36 percent, providing a long overdue safe guard for the people of Illinois. Additionally, the Fair Lending Act will establish maximum loan term limits, and create protections in the event of car repossession. Without the Fair Lending Act, Illinois law does little to protect consumers from abusive car title lending, as title loans are excluded from the laws that provide protections for payday loans and other small loans.
Senator Kimberly Lightford is introducing the Act this week and urges Illinois lawmakers to support the legislation and ensure their constituents are not gouged by triple-digit interest rates. I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to advance the Fair Lending Act, which brings much-needed relief for consumers. We are calling on lawmakers to stand with Illinois families and establish a reasonable interest rate cap for title loans.
A broad coalition of community organizations, anti-poverty nonprofits, faith leaders, veterans groups, and racial equity organizations support the Fair Lending Act. These barriers are disproportionately impacting low-income workers, women, immigrants and workers of color.
Despite the foundation laid by Social Security, additional retirement income is needed for families to make ends meet in retirement. Currently, ninety-two percent of US working households do not meet a conservative retirement savings target to maintain a standard of living. And with many households living paycheck to paycheck, the struggle to save towards retirement is in constant competition with an ever growing list of expenses. In addition to reporting on the barriers to saving for retirement, Equitable Access to Secure Choice also provides financial, messaging, and implementation considerations that would help make the Secure Choice program accessible for Illinois families.
These include, but are not limited to:. Secure Choice looks to create an additional option for Illinois workers to save and gain more financial opportunity. If the program is successfully implemented, millions of Illinoisans who currently do not have access to workplace retirement plans will be impacted.
The research in this report takes on key questions about the implementation of the Secure Choice Plan to help ensure that the program is addressing barriers to participation, especially among low-income workers, women, immigrants and workers of color.
